ATTN: I'm in need of renting studio space in or near the city of Groningen! Please and thank you for your help if you know of any leads or resources for finding a space 🙏 P.S. apologies that I am communicating in English. My Dutch is not very good yet and I'm a new resident here. My journey to becoming an artist has been a rather circuitous one. The first time I picked up a paintbrush was July 2022, and I immediately fell in love with it. Although I have multiple university degrees culminating in a medical Doctorate program, my art is entirely self-taught. Surprisingly, perhaps, I see a great deal of similarity between the occupations of artist and scientist. In fact, my heavy scientific background strongly informs my art and propelled me into this profession with a thirst for knowledge and unique insight about artist materials. In fact, one of my early insights was that the better I understand artist materials, the better my art can become. Hence, my motto, "Taking a Scientific Approach to Painting" was born. I've taken the "accelerated learners path" to painting and even though I started with watercolor alone, I paint using watercolors, encaustic, acrylic, oils, pastels, and mixed media. My first piece to enter a juried art shows came a mere 3 months into my painting journey, I was asked to teach watercolor at five months, I did a year-long internship with an international art supply company, opened my business 20 months after starting, and had my first solo gallery show at 28 months along. Although I have some talent, the scientific knowledge I started painting with has given me an edge. It allows me to understand and respond to pigments in ways that are comparable to artists with many more years of experience. Moreover, my background in ophthalmology and science have given me an edge when it comes to colour theory and understanding the neurobiology of how humans interpret visual stimuli. The first time I picked up a palette was July 17th. 2022 and I have painted every single day since then. As of 18 Dec 2025, that marks 1.250 consecutive painting days. In that time I've also acquired more than 1700 professional grade watercolor paints in an effort to study and learn about pigments, built myself a home laboratory, started a Facebook group for artists of all abilities, sold and displayed my art in a booth at 30 different events, and relocated my family from the Pacific Northwest region of the United States to the Netherlands. Living in the Netherlands feels like a dream coming true in spite of the fact that I never thought it would happen. It's still hard to believe that I'm really here, so some days I have to pinch myself to make sure it's real. 🥰 I look forward to learning more about my new home and making connections with the wonderful artists community here.
